Philadelphia Flower Show 2022, "In Full Bloom"

Branding Concept/Visual Identity | Art Direction: Kristen Bower

As the graphic/multimedia designer at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, my proposed visual direction for the 2022 Philadelphia Flower Show, "In Full Bloom" was chosen amongst a set of options pitched by members of the Creative Services team.

The process of developing/executing this visual direction involved a series of conversations about the past two years of pandemic life and its impact on society at large. Questions such as, ”How can horticulture be used for mental/physical healing?“, “How can we use horticulture to create community?”, and “What does it feel like to live life “In Full Bloom?” sparked the year's chosen theme name (developed by the Shows department).

The color palette and typography were intended to reflect the healing powers of nature, while conveying a celebratory feel. Floral elements were composed in a way that inspire a sense of community - uniting to remember what it’s like to live “In Full Bloom”.

PHS

As the Graphic/Multimedia Designer at The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, I was responsible for creating, conceptualizing, and executing a multitude of creative marketing pieces. Mediterranean Market by Divina for Whole Foods

Branding, Packaging, Watercolor Illustration

As a designer at FOODMatch, I had the opportunity to design a multi-SKU line of deli cups sold exclusively at Whole Foods. The concept of “Mediterranean Market by Divina” brings products imported directly from the Mediterranean region fresh into the hands of consumers in convenient, to-go containers. The series of watercolor designs are an expression of the freshness of the olives and antipasti mixes, with colors reflecting what’s inside the package. The logotype was designed by the Whole Foods creative team.

The Franklin Fountain

Posters, Advertising, Copywriting

I created a series of ads promoting The Franklin Fountain in Old City, Philadelphia. Although this old fashioned themed ice cream parlor is a Philadelphia favorite, the brand was lacking in advertising and promotion. I wanted to create something attention-getting with the spirit of Ben Franklin. To achieve this, I took a typographic approach that was inspired by posters of the Victorian era and Ben Franklin's famous quotes.

Kellogg's Variety Pack

Rebranding, Illustration

A fresh take on the classic Kellogg's Variety Pack, my goal was to capture the essence of each cereal by using bold and simple graphic forms that stand out amongst the busy labels we often see on supermarket shelves. The design was also made with the environment in mind, using less ink than a typical cereal box, and printed on 100% recycled cardboard.

Street Space Digital Publication

Digital Publication, Website

Street Space is a digital publication that features up and coming street artists from around the world. Because street art has been a male dominated art form in the past, this issue celebrates female street artists that have risen to prominence around the world. Each article references the artists’ style, while showcasing their work with interactive pop ups and animations. The articles are also divided by animated ads that are meant to be attention getting, and appeal to an urban, artistic audience.

The Divine Collection

Branding, Packaging, Web Design

The Divine Collection is a luxury brand I created for the upcoming Divine Lorraine apartments. The once abandoned hotel is currently under renovation and is set to be open as luxury apartments by 2017. The collection includes toiletries and beauty products for men and women as well as a vintage clothing boutique that would be available to the public in the apartments’ giftshop. Honoring this historic Philadelphia landmark, the packaging I created is inspired by the late-Victorian architecture of the building itself, which was designed by Willis Hale. I also designed a website where you can browse the products, and learn more about the history behind the Divine Lorraine.

Big Apple Cider Co.

Branding, Packaging

Big Apple Cider is a fictional company that produces premium-flavored ciders made in upstate New York orchards. Each flavor is named after a neighborhood in New York: Chelsea Cranberry, Soho Satsuma, Brooklyn Blackberry, and Greenwich Granny Smith. Made with freshly pressed apples and other fruits, the folks at Big Apple work day and night to deliver the freshest local flavors to the city. From this concept, I developed the tagline, “The Cider that Never Sleeps.”

Zaha Hadid Catalog

This is a catalog showcasing the works of cross-disciplinary architect Zaha Hadid. The catalog features her buildings, glass, furniture, and installation pieces and is meant to show the similar design principles behind them.  Because her buildings are very organic, I wanted the type to flow and have the fluid quality that is in her work. I included die cuts and vellum pages to highlight the air and fluidity within the structures she designs.

Mammal

Branding Identity, Posters, Catalog

Mammal is a fictional museum that features exhibitions exploring the human condition. For this project, Mammal presents Cross-Sensing: A Synesthetic Experience. The exhibition explores the neurological phenomena of Synesthesia in which one sensory pathway gets crossed with another. The project includes a logo, stationery, poster series, catalog, and animation.

Philadelphia Zoo Scavenger Hunt

Illustration, Hand Lettering, Invitation Design

This is an invitation for a scavenger for children that takes place at the Philadelphia Zoo. The event involves following a trail of crumbs that one of the animals left behind, in order to collect clues at various locations throughout the zoo. I used watercolor and hand lettering to create a playful, childlike feeling, and included a real trail of animal cracker crumbs along the bottom of the invitation. The folded format of the invitation is meant to have a quality of discovery and be fun for children to interact with. The project includes the invitation mailer, RSVP card, and envelope.

Hans Christian Andersen Covers

Illustration, Book Design

The goal for this project was to show Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales in a new way. Each book cover utilizes a layered composition and shows the environments in which the stories take place. I chose to do them in a cut paper style with patterns and textures to create a playful, yet elegant feeling.

Futurism

Layout, Typography

For this project, I designed a short book in the style of F.T. Marinetti, the Italian Futurist artist and poet, and author of the Futurist Manifesto. I was inspired by the typographic style of the Futurists and wanted to emulate their free-flowing typography.

Teen Kitchen

Layout, Branding

This is a program booklet and collateral for The International Culinary Center's summer program, "Teen Kitchen” in Soho, New York. The program is an intensive summer camp where teens can learn essential cooking skills from experienced chefs. I wanted to make the design sophisticated, yet fun to appeal to teens. It was also important to make the booklet’s information easy to follow, so I used icons and color to visually separate information, and used a limited color palette that was inspired by the foods you would make in the program.
